How to choose the size of board to board connector


The board to board connector can directly connect the power supply and signal between printed circuit boards (PCBs) through the pins of the connector, which can effectively simplify the application of requiring and stacking PCBs. In recent years, there is an increasingly small trend. The most common board-to-board connector spacing for handheld consumer electronics devices is 0.40 mm; while the 1.00 mm stack height is a small connector, and recently major OEMs are using connectors as low as 0.70 mm, sometimes even lower. Some years ago, the old miniature connector with a width of more than 4.00mm was replaced by the connector with a width range of 3.40mm. The current "narrow body" board to board concept is usually in the range of 2.40mm to 2.60mm. But the smaller the better? In the process of selecting board to board connectors, in addition to the basic problems such as circuit size, stack height and width, there are several things to consider:

 


The smaller the better, right? If you are willing to accept a smaller vacuum pick-up area, that may be right. Before selecting a subminiature connector, you must check whether the connector has all the other properties you need, and carefully test to ensure that it is strong and durable enough.

Then, when you need to choose a socket with a top mounted connector, because this setting can run tracking under the socket, and it is probably easy to use conformal coating. Some disadvantages of the top mounted socket are that the width of the vacuum pick-up area is often narrow, there is no plastic shell material above the socket terminal to prevent the rise caused by rough disconnection action, and the more uneven top surface of the socket may cause trouble for the operator's connection operation.

These new connectors, which are more disconnected, sound great! Yes, but you may need to tolerate additional connector lengths in order to achieve the locking functions required by these connectors; greater disconnection usually also means greater engagement, which may also cause problems with larger circuits.
